The president of Chad, Idriss Déby Itno who has ruled the country for thirty years has been killed in the battle field while fighting with heavily armed Libyan-based rebels.
Idriss Deby Itno had been declared the winner of Chad’s latest general election on Monday with nearly 80% of the vote, giving him a 6th term in office, after an election campaign in which demonstrations were banned or broken up.
However, according to a report by Theglobeandmail.com, instead of staying in the capital to give a victory speech, he went to the front lines of the battle against the rebels, where he was killed in unclear circumstances after sustaining injuries.
Chad’s army announced that the government and parliament had been dissolved and a curfew was imposed and borders were closed.
