An accident on the movie set of “Rust” in Santa Fe, New Mexico, has left a 42-year-old woman dead, according to authorities.
Santa Fe County deputies say they responded to Bonanza Creek Ranch where the movie was being filmed after receiving a 911 call saying someone had been shot.
According to a statement from one of the film’s producers, there was an incident involving the “misfire of a prop gun with blanks”. Halyna Hutchins, who was director of photography, died from her injuries, according to the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office.
Joel Souza, 48, the movie’s director, was also injured in the shooting and was taken to a hospital.
The prop gun was discharged by actor Alec Baldwin, the sheriff’s office said. No charges have been filed. Deputies are investigating how and what type of projectile was discharged from the prop gun.
The Santa Fe New Mexican reported Baldwin was seen Thursday outside the sheriff’s office in tears, but attempts to get comment from him were unsuccessful.
